Mexican collectives to participate in the first World Congress on Enforced Disappearances

The first World Congress on Enforced Disappearances will be held January 15-16 in Geneva, Switzerland, marking “a crucial step in the global struggle to prevent and eradicate this grave human rights violation,” announces the Mexico Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR).

This historic event will bring together governments, victims, civil society organizations that support their daily struggle and international bodies, “with the aim of fostering dialogue and determining a path towards the eradication of enforced disappearances in the world”. Issues such as international responsibility concerning enforced disappearances, the strengthening of search procedures and the protection of victims, human rights defenders, lawyers and journalists will be discussed.

Prior to the World Congress on Enforced Disappearances, relatives of disappeared persons in Mexico met with Nada Al-Nashif, UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights.
